Former Leeds United Man Linked To League Two Move

Former Leeds United coach Cameron Toshack has emerged as a potential candidate for the position of manager of League Two Newport County.

The Welsh side recently parted company with Graham Coughlan after just under two years in the job, with chairman Huw Jenkins citing a change in direction for their next appointment.

Coughlan oversaw an 18th-place finish in League Two, 13 points above the relegation zone after a run of eight defeats in a row at the end of the season.

The League Two side now could turn their attention to Cameron Toshack, according to Dai Sport.

Toshack and Jenkins have worked together previously at Swansea City with the former coaching within the club’s academy set up whilst the latter was chairman.

The 54-year-old began his coaching career at Macedonia as the assistant manager to his father before departing to take up a role at Swansea. He remained with the club from 2013 to 2019 in various roles in the academy set-up.

Toshack then took his first role as a full-time manager taking over as manager of Pafos FC in the Cypriot First Division. He remained with the side, picking up accolades and recording the club’s highest-ever win percentage before departing in 2020.

In 2022 he linked up with Jesse Marsch at Leeds United where he remained until the American’s sacking in February 2023.

A different approach for Newport County?

Toshack is very well thought of in the game, despite having little experience as a full first-team manager, his coaching ability and connections are something that cannot be underestimated.

He is very much a developmental coach, which would be a similar appointment to that of Michael Skubala at Lincoln City. He has a proven track record of developing and improving players not just for his side but to potentially sell on at a later date which is vital for survival in the lower leagues in recent years.

Jenkins has also seen his results first-hand, so will know the ability he possesses and will know the results it can yield, so whilst it may seem an appointment out of the blue, to the chairman it is a calculated step in a different direction.
