It’s been another busy summer at Manchester United. Big money signings such as Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have all arrived at Old Trafford on permanent deals. On the other hand, there have been limited outgoings, with no transfer fees struck up yet for United.
A number of players departed the Red Devils at the expiry of their contracts in June, with one of those players close to a move to the Serie A.
Former Manchester United Defender Close To Italy Move
According to Fabrizio Romano, former Manchester United defender, Victor Lindelof, is close to signing for Seria A side, Fiorentina.
Negotiations are advancing between the club and player, with Lindelof keen on the move. However, many details are yet to be clarified before pen is put to paper.
The centre back departed United at the end of his contract in June. The Red Devil’s have continued their dismal form under Ruben Amorim. After a trophyless campaign last season and a 16th placed finish, things were looking up after multiple arrivals this summer. However, it’s gone from bad to worse for Amorim. An opening day defeat to Arsenal was followed by a one-one draw to Fulham on Sunday. On Wednesday night, United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup to League Two side, Grimsby Town. A truly embarrassing night for Amorim and his men.
Lindelof’s MUFC Career
Lindelof signed for Manchester United from Benfica for £35 million in June 2017. The Sweden international was limited to just 17 league appearances in his first season due to Jose Mourinho‘s preference to Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
Lindelof scored his first goal for United in January 2019 in a two-two Premier League draw at home to Burnley.
September 2019 saw the centre back sign a new 6 year deal. He saw this deal out until June 2025 before his departure.
His most successful season came under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Lindelof played the majority of games as United finished second in the league and reached the Europa League final, where they eventually lost to Villarreal on penalties.
Following In The Footsteps Of De Gea
If the move to Fiorentina does come to fruition, Lindelof will be following in the footsteps of former United goalkeeper, David De Gea. The Spaniard also departed Old Trafford at the end of his contract in 2023, before joining Fiorentina.
With Lindelof now 31 years old, the Sweden international will be looking for regular minutes this season. Fiorentina will provide him that. With Stefano Pioli deploying a three at the back formation, Lindelof should slot straight in at one of the centre back positions.
The defender will add quality and experience to the side as they aim to improve on last season’s sixth placed finish.
