Ipswich Town could potentially move for Rangers midfielder John Lundstram, if his proposed switch to Trabzonspor falls downaccording to Alan Nixon.

Keiran McKenna’s side have recently confirmed their promotion back to the top tier of English football with back-to-back promotions following their success in League One last season becoming one of only five sides to achieve such a feat. (Manchester City, Watford, Norwich City and Southampton).

The Tractor Boys are now set for their first season in the Premier League since 2002 and have turned their attention to their squad ahead of the summer transfer window. According to Alan Nixon, they could look to sign Lundstram.

Who Is John Lundstram?

The 30-year-old has had an extensive playing career in English football, having progressed through the academy at Everton he went on to have loan spells at Doncaster Rovers, Yeovil Town, Leyton Orient, Blackpool and Scunthorpe United before linking up with Oxford United on a free transfer in 2015. He went on to make 104 appearances for the U’s which alerted Sheffield United to his ability in 2017. He appeared 120 times for the Blades including two seasons in the Premier League (19/20 & 20/21) before joining Scottish giants Rangers in July 2021 under then-manager Steven Gerrard.

During his spell north of the border he has picked up winners medals in the Scottish Cup (21/22) and the Scottish League Cup (23/24) making over 150 appearances from a midfield position. His contract is set to expire this summer ending his three-year spell in the Scottish Premiership.

Would Lundstram Suit Ipswich Town?

Ipswich Town have already shown they can adapt to a new league, having won promotion from League One and gone on to immediately compete in the ChampionshipHowever, with some of the huge budgets in the Premier League ensuring survival in the top flight could prove a more difficult task. Boss McKenna has already experienced the competitiveness of some of the promoted sides whilst in assisting Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Manchester United and will be keen to add some more grit and determination to his side. Lundstram has previously competed in the Premier League and is still playing at a high level in the Scottish top flight, and could add some more steel to the centre of the park when having to deal with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne.

He is also only 30, meaning he will feel he has a few years left to compete at the top level. His contract is also set to expire in the summer meaning that Ipswich’s budget can then be used elsewhere to add even more quality to the side.
