Jonny Margetts Interview Promotion

Former Lincoln City striker Jonny Margetts made a return to full-time football in February, signing for National League North side King’s Lynn Town.

He played 16 games for the Linnets in the back end of last season, netting an impressive nine goals along the way.

The ex-Lincoln City, Scunthorpe United, and Hull City striker had told his dad he would never play football again due to injuries, but made an unexpected return to full-time football with King’s Lynn last season.

Speaking exclusively to The Deck, Jonny Margetts: “I had no doubts that I would go up and score goals, but next year I want to score more goals, and go better than I did this season. I’m greedy with it, I want to score in every game.

“It went really well, but there’s still loads more next season I want to do, I want to score more goals and I want us to get promoted.

The 30-year-old signed for King’s Lynn from Matlock Town earlier in the year, after scoring a glut of goals during his spell in Derbyshire. He stepped up one division, from the Northern Premier League, with 28 goals in as many games under his belt.

“I Would Have Snapped Your Hand Off” for Staying Up:

King’s Lynn Town managed to stay in the National League North last season, escaping the threat of relegation with games to spare.

Margetts said: “It was good. When I signed the main objective was to stay up, and we did that going into the last two games. If you had offered me that when I signed, I would have snapped your hand off.

He has one more year left on his current contract with the Linnets, but will miss the start of the 2024/25 campaign after an unlikely red card. Margetts was given his marching order for the his first-time in his career in last term’s penultimate game, so will miss next season’s curtain raiser.

Tricky Start for the ex-Lincoln City Striker:

In his interview with The Deck, Margetts admitted that it was difficult to hit the ground running at his new club. With King’s Lynn fighting relegation fears, their play-style resulted in less chances for the prolific goalscorer.

He said: “It was tough, we were scrapping around the bottom, we weren’t creating many chances, because we were just trying to stay in games and be hard to beat. So, I found it difficult, but managed to nick a few goals here and there, and go on a bit of a run.”

Margetts did not manage a goal in his first three Linnets appearances, and only one in his first six, but his prolific edge soon made a return heading into the season’s run-in.

More to Come from Margetts:

The Doncaster-born forward has gone through plenty of ups and downs in his footballing career after starting out in the youth ranks of SkyBet Championship outfit Hull City.

Injuries threatened to end his career prematurely, so making a return to full-time football an achievement on its own. Margetts has managed to not only stay fit during his time at King’s Lynn, but score nine goals in a short spell so far.

The upcoming season brings with it optimism for the striker, who has his eyes firmly set on scoring more, and more goals.
