Manchester United have agreed a new contract with goalkeeper Tom Heaton as the Red Devils secure their third-choice for yet another season after he joined in 2021.
The home-grown rule in the Premier League means that teams must register a number of players from the United Kingdom in their squad.
Teams in the league may approach this rule differently, with some utilising academy players and others looking to veterans to help bolster their squad as well.
A common theme is veteran goalkeepers joining big sides in order to help their younger stars, and Manchester United have made sure they continue this pattern by securing their third-choice English keeper for yet another year.
Heaton Secures New Deal
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a one-year extension with the Red Devils to stay on as their third-choice goalkeeper.
The 39-year-old will move into his fifth season with United this year as he continues to bolster their home-grown quota as well as providing vital experience for their younger goalkeepers.
Heaton spent a large part of his career with Burnley, where he gained a lot of experience from not only the Premier League but also the Championship.
The Right Decision for United?
You can never have too much experience within a team, and with United coming off a poor season with a young side, Heaton’s knowledge could be vital.
Their current number one, Andre Onana, also suffered this season with some poor mistakes in games, so having that experienced head behind him could make all the difference to ensure his confidence levels do not drop.
Overall, there was no real reason for United not to keep Heaton this summer. With the confirmation that he was going to continue his playing career, it seemed a formality to keep him around.
A Key Part Behind the Scenes?
We have seen at many clubs how key veteran keepers can be, with players such as Scott Carson at Manchester City and John Ruddy at Newcastle United just two other examples of how this system works.
Heaton will likely be a key part of Amorim’s plans to help turn their goalkeeping fortunes around, whether that will be with Onana or a new goalkeeper next season.
Younger goalkeepers can learn a lot from these veterans, and Heaton’s impact will continue into next year with this new deal.
