Manchester United and Arsenal Battle for Last Minute Signing

Manchester United

Mathys Tel is now in contact with Manchester United and Arsenal with just over 36 hours remaining in the window. Tel is currently considering his options however it is clear that he wants a move before the transfer window closes.

The Bayern Munich forward hasn’t been favoured by manager Vincent Kompany, making just two starts in eight appearances this season. Tel told the club he wanted to leave and acquired interest from many Premier League sides, including Chelsea, Aston Villa, Tottenham, and now Arsenal and Manchester United.

Fabrizio Romano has said on X that the two clubs are in contact with the player’s camp and that the decision lies with Tel who is considering his options. This comes with just 36 hours remaining in the January transfer window.

Little is known about the deal Manchester United and Arsenal agreed with Bayern Munich. However, the German giant agreed to a £50m deal with Tottenham last week, but Mathys Tel rejected this move.

Where does Mathys Tel want to go?

The French 19-year-old rejected the permanent offer but is reportedly more open to loan moves to the Premier League. Fabrizio Romano reported that Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry were idols for Tel, hinting that this would encourage the French wonder kid to move to Manchester United or Arsenal.

Regardless of where Mathys Tel wants to move, Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Max Eberl, has stated, that “it needs to be right for all parties.” He also suggested that the club is open to both loans and permanent deals if the offer is sufficient.

Would he improve Manchester United or Arsenal?

Mathys Tel has only started two matches in eight appearances this season, scoring no goals and making just a single assist. He arrived in Munich as a 17-year-old in 2022, being compared to Mbappe. However, now 19, he has scored only 16 goals in 83 appearances.

With Gabriel Jesus being injured with an ACL injury and expected to be out for the rest of the season, Arsenal now rely on Kai Havertz as their starting striker. Havertz has eight goals in the league so far this season, making him Arsenal’s top goalscorer.

Manchester United have had just five goals from their starting strikers, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund. Acquiring Zirkzee for £35m in July and £64m for Hojlund in 2023, it is questionable whether signing another youngster is the right option. This being said the energy of a 19-year-old player used to playing in a winning side could be the thing to spark Amorim’s team into form.

Regardless of where Mathys Tel goes, it seems a move is likely before the end of the window. With a range of options from England, Italy, and Saudi Arabia, there will be a club that suits Tel’s skillset.
