Manchester United have opened talks with Aston Villa over the transfer of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with talks already underway.
The Red Devils have made the opening move for a new goalkeeper following the injury to current number one Andre Onana.
Martinez has long been linked to Ruben Amorim’s side, but the club have been focusing on other targets with Cunha first through the door and Bryan Mbuemo expected to follow.
Manchester United Open Aston Villa Talks
The club had been expected to have to move on Onana prior to signing a new goalkeeper, but with the player currently set for a spell on the side lines it has made the move more urgent, despite Martinez’s current ban.
John Victor had been linked as a potential cut-price option with suggestions that there has been contact from representatives of the player and the Old Trafford decision makers.
But it appears now that the club are willing to act on their interest in the Aston Villa keeper as a priority. Reports earlier in the summer suggested that he was pushing for a move to the Red Devils, but he was just one name on a list of targets for Ruben Amorim’s side.
According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul negotiations are now underway.
Onana Out of Manchester United Plans?
It has become increasingly clear as the season has gone on that Andre Onana cannot cut it in the Premier League and does not suit Ruben Amorim’s style of play.
Manchester United let go a club legend in David de Gea in an attempt to cater to Erik ten Hag’s demands but that decision has seemingly come back to bite them with the Spaniard continuing to perform well and his replacement making a series of costly mistakes.
One of Amorim’s first jobs is to try and undo the damage done under the reign of ten Hag before he can get started on closing the gap on some of their traditional Premier League rivals. One of the first players that need to leave, perhaps even more so than some of the five players cast aside by the club is Onana.
