Michael Skubala: Lincoln City Need More Depth

Head coach Michael Skubala is looking to add more depth to his Lincoln City squad.

The Imps finished just outside the play-off places in SkyBet League One last season, after a campaign plagued by injuries up front and in midfield.

The former Leeds United under-21s boss believes that adding strength in depth is the key to City’s summer transfer strategy, as they build towards his first full season in charge of the club.

“We Probably Need More Depth”:

Speaking at a media day to mark the EFL fixture release, Lincoln City’s head coach said: “The only thing I learnt last season is that we probably need more depth in the squad as an entirety. When we got hurt, it was because we picked up injuries and then we had to move people into different positions that weren’t their natural positions, and they did fantastic by the way.”

“We started to creak with bodies, so the first thing in our strategy is trying to get depth into the squad. So, we can consistently fight on all fronts.”

City were missing Ben House and Tyler Walker for a vast portion of the last campaign, leaving a gap at the top of the pitch.

The fixtures announcement means that Lincoln will travel to Mark Robinson’s Burton Albion on the opening day, before hosting Barnsley’s new manager Darrell Clarke and newly promoted Mansfield Town.

Do Lincoln City Need a New Striker?

Attacking options became an issue last term for Lincoln City, as injuries pilled up. Luton Town loanee Joe Taylor ended up as the club’s top-scorer, despite only joining in January.

Michael Skubala was asked by reporter Jamie Johnson if he is looking to add a new striker to his squad, or if he sees Taylor’s replacement already among the City ranks.

He said: “Tyler [Walker] feels like a new signing to me, and what a new signing to have. But, that won’t stop us doing some more business if we think it’s right to do for either the long term or the here and now.”

Tyler Walker returned to the LNER Stadium last sumer, but missed the vast majority of the season due to injury. He made a substitute appearance during the final day defeat to Portsmouth, and is now fit ahead of the upcoming campaign.

What Do the Imps Need? – Opinion

Personally, I don’t think Lincoln City need a new striker. Tyler Walker (if he stays fit) is a great replacement for the goals Joe Taylor scored in the back-end of last season.

Alongside the ever-impressive Ben House, and young duo Freddie Draper and Jovon Makama, the centre-forward unit is in good shape at Sincil Bank.
