New Favourite Emerges For Cambridge United Job - The Deck - Entertainment, Film, Film News

Former Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley has leapfrogged Kevin Betsy as the new favourite to take over as the new boss of Cambridge United, according to a report in The Yorkshire Post.

The League One side are currently without a manager, having sacked Mark Bonner following their dismal display against Lincoln City, which they lost 3-0 to Michael Skubala’s new side. The U’s were left languishing in 18th place in the table, four points clear of the relegation zone.

The early favourite to take over the role was former Crawley Town boss Kevin Betsy, who was appointed as Mark Bonner’s assistant in June following a brief spell at Wigan Athletic as part of Kolo Toure’s team.

However, former Portsmouth, Huddersfield, Lincoln City and Braintree boss Danny Cowley has now emerged as the front-runner for the job. The 45-year-old is normally accompanied by brother Nicky Cowley in a management duo and recently turned down the chance to become manager of League Two Bradford City following the sacking of Mark Hughes and prior to Graham Alexander taking over at Valley Parade. The pair were also being linked to a return to Sincil Bank before the appointment of Michael Skubala.

Cambridge defeated fellow League One side Fleetwood Town 4-0 in the FA Cup with goals from Andrew, Kachunga, Okenabirhie and Ahadme securing the victory for caretakers Barry Corr and Kevin Betsy. The U’s have now been drawn away to Blackburn Rovers in the next round.

When asked by TalkSPORT what they are looking for in their next club they said:

“I think you are always trying to find a football club that is self-aware enough to know where it is today”

“Clarity over where it wants to go and I think once you have the start point and the destination, then you can decide if you have the skill set to maybe put the stepping stones in place”

“Once you understand the start point and the destination, it’s then to understand from a club perspective what they perceive to be the time frame.

“Because we know in football you don’t always get too much time, so you have to make sure you’re aligned in that way.”

“We’ve had our best successes when we’ve worked with good people really. For Nicky and I, it has never been a one-man or a two-man job, it’s been a collection of people who all have the best interest of the club at heart and want to work really really hard and work intelligently hard.”

Writer’s View

Danny and Nicky are seemingly ready to re-enter the world of EFL management and have been linked to roles up and down the country. However, it seems they are being selective to ensure the next role is the correct one. They have spoken at length about how they chose a club and after making poor career choices in the past they would rather take their time than end up in a bigger mess than they were before.
