Premier League Giant Looks To Swoop In On Charlton Athletic Target

Charlton Athletic could miss out on the signing of veteran goalkeeper John Ruddy, following his departure from relegated Championship side Birmingham City as Premier League Newcastle United make an offer for his services.

The 37-year-old has confirmed his exit from the relegated Blues as he considers his next step in his career. Birmingham City were relegated to the third tier for the first time in three decades, and although open to staying at St Andrew’s has decided to step away to pursue other opportunities.

He had been in discussions with Charlton Athletic  over a potential move to Nathan Jones’ side, with the League One club at one stage considered favourites to sign him. However, according to the Mirror his availability has alerted Premier League giants Newcastle United who have contacted the player to gauge his interest.

Eddie Howe’s side currently have Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka on their books with former Liverpool goalkeeper Lorus Karius likely to depart at the end of his current deal.

What has Ruddy said regarding his Birmingham City exit?

Speaking on Instagram Ruddy thanked the fans;

“”I would just like to say thank you.

“Thank you to all of you Bluenoses that made me and my family feel so welcome at your wonderful club over the last two years.

“It didn’t end as any of us wanted to but I hope the one thing that you can say about me was I gave everything every time I pulled the shirt on.

“Sometimes it was enough and other times it wasn’t to be, but it was a genuine privilege to play for your club.”

What does this mean for Charlton Athletic?

Charlton have been in the market for two goalkeepers, who according to manager Jones, need to be ready to not just compete at League One level, but also Championship level.

The pool of potential candidates isn’t huge, they have already picked up Will Mannion from Cambridge United, who was expected to be a back up to Ruddy should he come in.

The former Birmingham man may still join the third-tier side, the promise of first team football may be enough to persuade him rather than joining Newcastle as likely a second or more likely a third choice option.

However, if he doesn’t it may be that the Addicks have to look to use some of their transfer budget to prise an asset away from another club this transfer window.
