Sheffield Wednesday Among Championship Interest in Rangers Winger

Sheffield Wednesday are among the SkyBet Championship clubs targeting Rangers man Scott Wright.

Second-tier newbies Derby County, and Ryan Lowe’s Preston North End, are the two other clubs understood to have made enquires about the Scottish winger.

In Demand Scott Wright:

The former Aberdeen man joined the blue half of the Old Firm in 2021, and remains under contract until the summer of 2025. However, he has taken the interest of a trio in the Championship, with Sheffield Wednesday, Derby, and Preston all having made reported enquiries for the 26-year-old.

Darren Witcooop revealed the interest in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, while adding that the three clubs all have different targets on their lists of potential recruits.

The Owls are in talks with out of contract winger Ian Poveda, after his loan spell at the club from Leeds United last season. However, it has recently come to light that the club is “not matched” with the player in negotiations.

Witcoop also posted that there was interest from overseas in the winger, while he did not name the parties involved.

Championship the Likely Destination, But Will it be Sheffield Wednesday? – Opinion

As Witcoop wrote himself in his social media post, the Championship is the likely destination for Scott Wright this summer. The Rangers man has seemingly caught the eye of many different clubs, namely from the English second-tier.

He would be a good fit for the division after amassing years of experience north of the border. He has made over a century of appearance for Rangers, while his total in the Scottish Premier League surpasses 200.

Wright would certainly be capable in the Championship, but I personally do not think his landing place will be Hillsborough. Danny Rohl and his staff are reportedly looking at other options, including the aforementioned Poveda.

Meanwhile, he could prove to be a useful addition to Paul Warne’s newly-promoted Derby County, or Championship stalwarts Preston North End.
