League One Wigan Athletic are closing in on the shock signing of Lincoln City talisman Ethan Erhahon, following links to Championship sides Swansea City, Derby County, Oxford United and fellow third tier side Bolton Wanderers.
The Imps have been clear that they would be open to selling the 24-year-old this summer if his valuation is met. He was left out of the club’s pre-season friendly against Grimsby Town due to the ongoing transfer interest with Michael Skubala admitting the club needed to protect their asset.
Erhahon signed for the club from St Mirren in 2023 and has gone on to make 107 appearances, scoring two goals and providing six assists.
Wigan Athletic to See Off Swansea City, Derby County, Oxford United and Bolton Wanderers Interest in Lincoln City Star
Reports emerged yesterday that Wigan Athletic, Swansea City, Oxford United and Bolton Wanderers were all chasing the midfielder’s signature. This is on top of previous claims that Derby County and Stoke City were also interested.
However, it emerged that Swansea had not returned with a new bid since they saw their initial £600k offer declined earlier in the window, paving the way for the Latics to secure the signing. Transfer journalist Graeme Bailey has indicated that the club are now in pole position in what would be considered a shock move.
Erhahon had been widely expected to move to the Championship, so for the player to be remaining in League One will be a blow for all involved.
Lincoln already lost Paudie O’Connor and Sean Roughan this transfer window to League One clubs and seeing a third star remain in the division will be difficult for some fans to take.
Lincoln City Rebuild
The Imps do not believe that they need a drastic rebuild this summer, with many of their players being on longer term contracts. They have already replaced O’Connor with Sonny Bradley but there will be some concern on the amount of talent walking out the door.
The club clearly have a valuation for Ethan Erhahon, and contingency plans will be in place to replace him. How successful that replacement is could be the difference between a struggle and something more ambitious.
