National League side Halifax Town have announced the signing of Tom Pugh from National League North side Scunthorpe United, as confirmed via a statement on the club’s website.

The 23-year-old joins the Shaymen on a two-year deal after being released by Scunthorpe at the end of the season

Pugh began his career in the Leeds United academy system before signing his first professional deal with Scunthorpe in 2017. He proceeded to make 36 appearances for the Iron and represented Wales at U21 level on two occasions before being released in 2021.

His departure from the club was a short-lived one, as he re-joined the Scunthorpe after signing for Scarborough and making only two appearances. This season, Pugh has made 17 appearances as they finished second in the league, falling just short of promotion in the playoffs.

He has now joined the Shaymen, becoming the third player after Jack Evans and Kane Thompson-Sommers to join the club after a successful spell at Hereford during Millington’s reign as manager.

Where Will Pugh Fit At Halifax?

Pugh’s primary position is in central-midfield, taking up a box-to-box or more defensive role. He also offers versatility down the right-hand side, being capable of playing as a right midfielder or at right-back.

Since Chris Millington was appointed Halifax manager, the club have often opted for a five-at-the-back system. with a two-man midfield in front. Pugh will likely be deployed as one of  the two midfielders in his strongest position, but if necessary he may also be able to fill in at right wing-back or as a right midfielder in front of the midfield duo.

Is Pugh Ready For The Step Up?

Halifax have often looked to the division below for young talent, with Pugh fitting that image, and with a manager like Chris Millington, there’s a strong chance that his ability will improve.

With the departure of experienced veteran Luke Summerfield this summer, he does have big boots to fill but has the potential to be a niche replacement and a tidy signing.
