Gateshead Loanee Tipped For League Two Switch

Gateshead goalkeeper Archie Mair has been linked with a loan move to League Two side Morecambe according to a report from journalist Paddy Davitt.

The goalkeeper is currently mid-way through a season-long loan spell with the National League side but has been tipped for a potential switch back into the EFL with Morecambe.

Mair has made 26 appearances so far this season for Gateshead in all competitions, keeping seven clean sheets for the club and has remained number one despite Mike Williamson leaving for MK Dons in League Two.

The 22-year-old began his youth career with SPFL side Aberdeen before moving to Norwich City in 2019. He’s since had loan spells with the likes of Notts County and Lincoln City, but he’s best known for his short stint with the former last season.

After arriving on loan at Meadow Lane last season, Mair fell behind in the pecking order but was given the responsibility of being between the sticks during the penalty shootout in the play-off final against Chesterfield in May. He saved a handful of penalties as Notts County clinched promotion back to the EFL.

The Scottish goalkeeper joined Gateshead in the summer in a bid to earn regular first-team minutes, which is something that he has achieved with great success under caretaker manager Rob Elliott so far this season.

Gateshead are currently fifth in the National League and pushing towards a top-three finish this season. The club have lost just 7 of their 25 league games so far and have produced some excellent results courtesy of the form of the likes of Marcus Diangana and Stephen Wearne.

However, according to reports it appears as though Archie Mair has appeared on the radar of League Two side Morecambe ahead of a potential switch to the club.

Writer’s View

Mair is an excellent, young goalkeeper and has worked incredibly hard to become a number one at Gateshead so far this season in the National League.

However, the opportunity to return to the football league would be an extremely difficult move to turn down and that could put a further dent in Gateshead’s push for the top seven.
