Championship side Millwall have submitted a bid for Notts County striker Macauley Langstaff, who has caught the attention of several clubs in recent weeks.

Neil Harris may be looking to strengthen his Millwall side, and Macauley Langstaff could make the step up from League Two side Notts County to join the Lions.

The Magpies named Macauley Langstaff captain ahead of the 2024/2025 campaign, but this has not stopped interest from Championship sides, including Swansea City, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

How did Langstaff fair last season?

Langstaff proved his goal-scoring ability for County in the National League, where he picked up 46 goals and assists in 45 games; he was one of the key stars for the Magpies in their promotion back to League Two.

However, there were some question marks over whether Langstaff could replicate his goal-scoring form in League Two. The 27-year-old silenced any doubters, though, taking League Two in his stride, scoring 28 goals, picking up six assists and playing every game in the League.

During his time at Meadow Lane so far, Langstaff has played 96 times, scoring 70 times and picking up ten assists.

Millwall bolstering their squad.

Pete O’Rourke has reported that Millwall have submitted a bid for the forward as they look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.

The London-based side finished the season in 13th place, but since Neil Harris’s return to the Lions, they have looked like a strong side, winning eight of their 13 matches, with five coming on the bounce at the end of the season. However, signings may be needed to push up the table.

Millwall’s top scorer last season was forward Zian Flemming, with seven, so a striker with goal-scoring ability, such as Langstaff, could be what the Lions need. Millwall only has two strikers, Kevin Nisbet and Tom Bradshaw, who scored nine combined goals.

Langstaff could bolster this attack with his goalscoring instinct and ability to get a shot off. In recent seasons, Millwall have had Tom Bradshaw and Zian Flemming as their main contributors, but having another striker could provide depth, add competition, and potentially goals.

As it stands, Langstaff would come in as the club’s first signing, but more reinforcements may follow.

Huge loss for Notts County.

Notts County had a struggling end to the 2023/2024 season, finishing 14th in the League. However, the Magpies have made some shrewd signings, reinforcing their defence. But losing one of their star players, Macauley Langstaff may be too big of a blow.

Notts County do have other strikers, such as David McGoldrick and Alassana Jata, but the loss of Langstaff who a consistent source of goals may present a difficult challenge for the club’s hierarchy to replace. Since joining the Magpies he has had the most goal contributions in both the National League and League Two, as well as being the side’s primary output.

Langstaff has also created good partnerships with his teammates, an example being Jodi Jones who finished the season with 24 assists, helping County finish the season with the joint third most goals.

Since joining the Magpies, the 27-year-old has been an integral player both commercially and on the pitch. While losing a player of his talent and ability could be damaging, the striker could make a huge profit for the League Two side who signed Langstaff from Gateshead for approximately £50k.
