Former Fleetwood Town and Carlisle United youngster Sam Fishburn has signed for National League North side Scunthorpe United, the club has announced.

The 20-year-old has made nine SkyBet League Two appearances during his career so far, and has now joined the Iron on a permanent deal after being released by the Cod Army.

Who is Sam Fishburn?

The attacker signed for then-SkyBet League One outfit Fleetwood Town last summer, but was unable to break into the first team across the past season.

He left the Cod Army, managed by former Liverpool and Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam, as a free agent recently. Upon his exit from the relegated side, he has been picked up by Andy Butler and Scunthorpe United.

Fishburn, who was born in Gateshead, came through the youth ranks at Carlisle United. He went on to make 15 senior appearances for the Cumbrian outfit, including nine in the fourth tier during a breakthrough 2021/22 campaign.

The striker has developed his goalscoring edge during various non-league loan spells. He spent stints at Lancaster City and Morpeth Town, where he notched all of his 14 career goals to date.

In the 2022/23 he spent a spell at Blyth Spartans, who were then in the National League North. Then, towards the end of last season, he managed a run of games on loan at York City in the National League.

A Second Scunthorpe United Summer Signing:

Fishburn becomes Scunthorpe United’s second new face of the summer transfer window, following South African striker Carlton Ubaezuonu into North Lincolnshire’s Attis Arena.

The new striking pair join the prolific Danny Whitehead in the Iron’s attacking ranks ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Promising and Young Forward – Opinion:

Sam Fishburn might not have broke into Fleetwood’s League One squad, but has managed to put the ball in the back of the net at a similar level to the Iron.

Scunthorpe United are building a capable team ahead of the upcoming season, as they look to mount another promotion push. Competition in the attacking ranks is always a healthy sign, and Fishburn’s signing helps build more of that for Andy Butler’s men.
