Swindon Town have completed the signing of Irish defender Ryan Delaney, following the expiry of his contract with League Two rivals Newport County.

Mark Kennedy continues to bolster his squad with the signing of 27-year-old centre-back, Ryan Delaney, as Swindon prepares for the 2024/25 League Two campaign.

Who is Ryan Delaney?

The Irishman is an experienced EFL centre-back standing at 6’5ft. He began his professional career over in Ireland with Wexford at 18 years-old. Impressive performances saw him earn a move to Burton Albion in 2016.

Delaney was sent out on loan to Cork City where he made 30 appearances for the Rebel Army and netted an impressive six goals, helping Cork win the League of Ireland Premier Division.

Moves to Rochdale and AFC Wimbledon saw Delaney rack up 73 appearances. He then joined Bolton in 2020 and was a part of the side that achieved promotion from League Two under Ian Evatt.

Morecambe was the next stop for the 27-year-old where he spent two years with The Shrimps, as well as joining Scunthorpe United on loan in 2022.

He was most recently the captain of fellow League Two Side and divisional rivals, Newport County. Delaney made 30 appearances and scored just one goal during the 23/24 season.

What will Delaney bring to Swindon?

Now his signing has been confirmed by the club’s website, Delaney will bring plenty of experience to SN1, having made 308 career appearances at various levels such as League One, League Two and League of Ireland Premier Division.

He also brings promotion experience. In the 20/21 season, Bolton Wanderers achieved automatic promotion from League Two where Delaney made 27 appearances and contributed three goals.

Finally, he brings a physical presence and strong defensive ability to the Swindon team, something which the Robins have lacked for multiple seasons.

His 6’5ft frame should be advantageous in aerial duals as well as attacking set pieces, another one of Swindon’s weaknesses.

How important is this signing?

The addition of Delaney to the Swindon Town side helps to add further defensive stability to the League Two club.

He has promotion-winning experience which could prove to be a vital asset for Mark Kennedy’s side in helping to improve on their disappointing 2023/24 campaign.
