Swindon Town Reportedly Open Talks With Manager

Swindon Town have reportedly opened talks with former Morecambe boss Derek Adams over the vacant managerial position, according to Alan Nixon on his Patreon account.

The Scotsman has been linked with the League Two club over the past couple of weeks after he was seen, according to Swindon Advertiser, at The County Ground for Swindon’s  3-2 win against AFC Wimbledon in April where current interim manager Gavin Gunning picked up his fifth win since taking charge.

Who is Derek Adams?

The 48-year-old is currently without a club following his departure from Scottish outfit Ross County in February. Adams has had success at this level in the past, with two promotions from League Two, one through automatic promotion with Plymouth Argyle, and one by means of the play-offs with Morecambe in 2021. He began his career with Ross County, winning the Scottish League One Title in 2008 and during his second spell with the club, won the league and achieved promotion to the Scottish Premier League.

Swindon’s Worst Season Ever

Swindon recently recorded their worst ever league finish, following the end of the League Two campaign with the club finishing 19th. Their lowest ever finish came in the 18/19 League Two season where the club finished 18th.

The Robins kicked off their season in fine form under former manager Michael Flynn, where they went nine games unbeaten, including a 6-0 win against Crawley at The County Ground. However, Swindon’s season took a turn and Michael Flynn was sacked mid-January after a dismal run of form which saw Swindon pick up 15 points from a possible 57.

The League Two side appointed 32-year-old Gavin Gunning on an interim basis where he won only five games during his tenure. Toward the end of the season, Swindon appointed Jimmy Shan as assistant Head Coach.

Following the end of the season, Swindon announced that 11 players, including Swindon icon and club captain Charlie Austin, would be released from the club, which could point to a squad rebuild , potentially under a new manager ahead of the 24/25 season.

Adams isn’t what you’d call a “Swindon appointment” as he doesn’t align with the clubs footballing philosophy which is normally an attacking, possession based side potentially suggesting a change in model as the current club model hasn’t brought success in the past few seasons.
