Ex-Lincoln City Manager Hopes Club Can Reach Championship

Former Lincoln City manager Peter Jackson hopes that the club can manage to achieve the promotion that he believes they need.

Speaking to reporter Jamie Johnson, the ex-Imps boss spoke of how he hoped Lincoln could manage to secure promotion into the SkyBet Championship.

What did Peter Jackson say?

He said: “It’s a really well run football club, that can hopefully get success and get the promotion that the club needs. I don’t think it will ever be a Premiership club, but certainly I think it has aspirations to be a Championship club. So, hopefully that will be in the future.”

And added: “The people of Lincoln were special to me. I went through throat cancer when I was at Lincoln, and the support and cards I got from the people of Lincoln was really, really lovely. It touched me. I got so many cards and I’ll never forget. I loved my time at the club, it was a special time for me there.”

Former Lincoln City manager:

Peter Jackson took the reins at Sincil Bank in October 2007, with the Imps rock bottom of the English Football League. He led the, to safety in League Two, but was forced to step back in March of the following year due to his cancer diagnosis.

The Bradford-born Jackson returned to the dug-out the following year, after being given the all clear. However, he parted company with the club in September 2009 as a result of a poor run of form.

He returned to management in 2011, on an initially temporary basis, at Bradford City. He had captained the Bantams early in his career, and spent two spells at the West Yorkshire-outfit.

Jackson was a boyhood Bradford fan, and lifted the Third Division trophy on the day of the Valley Parade Fire, in 1985.

He also managed Huddersfield Town across two spells, after spending time there in his playing days.

The Imps went close to the play-offs this season:

Jackson said he always keeps his eye out for Lincoln City’s results, which would have brought him joy in the latter half of this season. Under new head coach Michael Skubala, City surged into play-off contention, avoiding defeat for 16 consecutive games.

They ended the season with defeat to already-crowned champions Portsmouth, while they need a win to secure a place in the top six.

The fact that Lincoln came so close to the SkyBet League One play-offs can be seen as an achievement, as they were looking destined for a mid-table finish when they slipped into a poor patch of form through December.
